BBL 9: Tom Curran all-round effort helps Sydney Sixers clinch the match in Super Over

Tom Curran all-round efforts helped Sydney Sixers defeat Sydney Thunder in a thrilling Super Over match played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on Saturday.

Sydney Thunder captain Callum Ferguson won the toss and decided to bat first. Usman Khawaja and Alex Hales played with positive intent with aggressive strokes which put pressure on Sydney Sixers bowlers. Sean Abbott got the breakthrough dismissing Usman Khawaja for 16. Khawaja and Hales added 48 for opening wicket. At the end of six overs, Sydney Thunder were 50 for 1.

After the power play over, Tom Curran dismissed the other opener Alex Hales for a quickfire 32 off 21 balls. After losing 2 quick wickets, Alex Ross and Sydney Thunder captain Callum Ferguson steadied the innings taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Ross looked in good touch scoring 26 off 22 balls with 2 sixes. Tom Curran got an important breakthrough getting the wicket of Ross. Ross and Ferguson added 56 runs for the 4th wicket. From 110 for 4, Sydney Sixers reduced Sydney Thunder to 115 for 7. Sydney Thunder captain led from the front hitting boundaries and reached his fifty off 40 balls. He and Arjun Nair added 34 runs for the 8th wicket. Ferguson was dismissed off the final ball. Sydney Thunder posted 149 for 8 in 20 overs.

Chasing 150 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Sydney Sixers as Hayden Kerr was dismissed in the very first over by Cook. Joshua Philippe struggled to score runs while Daniel Hughes took on Sydney Thunder bowlers. At the end of first six overs, Sydney Sixers were 38 for 1.

Soon after the power play over, Chris Morris dismissed Joshua for 11. He and Hughes added 37 runs for the 2nd wicket. Moises Henriques showed his class with aggressive stroke play and also rotating the strike. With 28 runs required off 18 balls, Moises Henriques was dismissed for 41.

With 16 runs required off the final over, Curran hit a six off the first ball which made the life easier for Sydney Sixers. With 6 to win from 2 balls, Tom Curran scored a boundary to make 2 from 1 ball. Curran was run out off the final ball to take the match into Super Over. Sam Curran hit 35 off 17 balls.

Batting first, Sydney Sixers were dealt a big blow as Tom Curran was dismissed off the very first ball by Chris Morris. Moises Henriques hit 14 runs from the last 4 balls and run out. Sydney Sixers gave a target of 17 runs to win for Sydney Thunder.

In reply, Tom Curran gave 5 runs from the first 4 balls which titled the game in favour of Sydney Sixers. Alex Hales hit 10 runs off the last 2 balls but it was not enough for Sydney Thunder to win the match

Sydney Thunder lost their first match of BBL 9.

Tom Curran was named the match of match for his all-round performance

Melbourne Renegades will take on Adelaide Strikers in tomorrows match at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne.
