Chattogram Challengers: making a difference, always, on and off the cricket field.

In just a few short months, the novel coronavirus has grown into a global pandemic. Across the world, healthcare systems are overwhelmed and thousands of lives have already been lost due to the virus. The COVID-19 outbreak has already disrupted the cricketing calendar. Several sportsmen from other sports have even tested positive for the disease.

There is a nationwide panic and a cloud of economic uncertainty and disparity looms large. In such unprecedented times, hospital foundations and healthcare charities are scaling up operations to ensure healthcare professionals have the necessary support and equipment to care for COVID-19 patients. In such a scenario, Bangladesh Premier League (BPLT20) Team Chattogram Challengers, in association with Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation (SBF), are pioneering to raise funds and make a difference.

Established in 2012, registered under the Trusts Act and NGO Affairs Bureau, Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation (SBF) is a nonprofit organization that works for the upliftment of the society. Spreeha is well known for its innovative solutions to socio-economic problems and also an innate ability to showcase initiative in times of crisis – and this time it does that in association with Chattogram Challengers. As of January 2020, Cricview reports that- “Spreeha has empowered 240,006 lives in Bangladesh: 146,589 people received healthcare; 7,100 children were educated; 5,996 youth received training and 80,321 individuals received counselling. Spreeha seeks to inspire a million lives by 2025.”

The number of infected people and death are rising day by day. According to the Government of Bangladesh, as of April 30, 2020 – Over 60000 COVID-19 tests have been conducted and the number of infected has crossed the 7000 mark.

Leading the efforts to fight COVID-19, hospital foundations and healthcare charities are scaling up operations to ensure healthcare professionals have the necessary support and equipment to care for COVID-19 patients needing treatment. Many hospitals are in desperate need of extra equipment and critical medical aid, including personal protective equipment such as N95 masks, gloves, and much more to protect frontline workers. Here is where Spreeha decided to take the initiative and for collaboration approached BPLT20 cricket team Chattogram Challengers. The Managing Director of Chattogram Challengers, Dato’ K. M. Rifatuzzaman, as reportedly assured Spreeha that he would do anything and everything within his realms to contribute and share the Chattogram Challengers’ motto of always bringing hope and smiles to the general populace – whether it is on or off the field!
