Jofra Archer 6 wickets in the 1st innings bowled out Australia at the of 179
Jofra Archer career-best figures helped England end the first day of the 3rd Test match against Australia on a rain-curtailed 1st day played at Headingly, Leeds on Thursday.
After the rain delay, England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bowl first. The conditions were helpful for fast bowlers. Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer troubled Australian openers. Archer got the breakthrough dismissing Marcus Harris who was replacing Cameron Bancroft before the rain arrived again. The umpire decided to call lunch at a score of 12 for 1.
The match did not start immediately after the lunch break. Stuart Broad and Archer again troubled the Australian batsmen with swing and pace. Broad struck by getting the wicket of Usman Khawaja. The umpire did not give out and the umpire had to reverse his decision to out. Rain again arrived at the score of 39 for 2. Play again started with David Warner and Marcus Labuschagne at the crease. With the score at 54 for 2, the play was again stopped due to rain and tea was called by the umpires.
After the tea break, it was a good batting display by David Warner and Marcus who took advantage of poor bowling by the England bowlers. Warner who was in poor form before this match reached his first 50 off 79 balls. As things looked dangerous for England team, Jofra Archer got the breakthrough dismissing Warner with beauty for 61. Warner and Labuschagne added 111 runs for the 3rd wicket. Broad and Archer rattled the Australian middle-order getting wickets of Head, Wade. Labuschagne reached his 50 of 73 balls. Woakes got the wicket of Australian captain Tim Paine with a review for LBW.
Jofra Archer continued his superb bowling getting the wicket of James Pattinson. He then took the wicket of Pat Cummins to pick his maiden fifer in Test cricket. Labuschagne was dismissed by Ben Stokes for a superb 74. Archer dismissed Nathan Lyon to bowl out Australia for 179.
